Marvin & Guy - Music For Race

  • It's best not to read into the concept of Marvin & Guy's Music For Race, inspired by an automotive theme as old as the highway tarmac Kraftwerk first drove on. Sebastien Bouchet might sing like an engine moving through the gears on "Targa (Long Drive)," but the EP is notable for its more straightforward qualities. As well as being impeccably produced, the music draws on offbeat-yet-accessible disco mutations of late '70s rock, clipped kosmische and Lindstrøm-style electronics. The feedback-laden guitar chords and glassy organ melodies of "Stratos" tune into something between Skatt Bros' "Walk The Night" and Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall." If it's Music For Race's most distinguished track, then it's followed closely by "Targa (Long Drive)," which secures humming synths and glinting arpeggios to crisp percussion and Bouchet's wafting voice. Breezy and pastoral, those epic 13 minutes seem to drift by in half the time. "Countach," another lengthy piece, sounds faintly threatening beneath windswept synths and light squiggles of electric guitar. But its meandering transitions and excessive runtime ultimately feel aimless.
