Vernon Felicity - Atlantis EP

  • Boris Bunnik makes a lot of records. Since his most recent Conforce album, there's been an experimental self-release as Hexagon and two outings, as Versalife and Silent Harbour, on Shipwrec and its Deep Sound Channel affiliate. His new project, Peeping Tom, emerged on Rotterdam-based label Pinkman at the end of 2015, and there's been a string of Vernon Felicity EPs, too. It's testament to Bunnik's abilities that his output never seems to dip in quality. Bunnik's first record for Delft shoots from the hip, with four tracks enriched by his usual subtle nuances. "Defender" gets down to business with a surly acid workout, then drums and cymbals open up "Rdmx8" on a slowed-down step, before they're swept into a gurgling tide. It delivers a few serotonin bursts in the second half, recalibrates the bleary senses, and wakes up amidst drips and smears at the close. On the flip, "DC" is classic militant machine music with a sci-fi air, while "Atlantis" is a cool and playful Detroit send out.
