Dub Phizix ‎- Do One / Doberman

  • SenkaSonic might become one of drum & bass's premier labels if it picks up the pace. It's run by Dub Phizix, currently one of the genre's best producers, and so far the label has featured only his tracks. George Ovens makes functional and versatile tracks free of drum & bass clichés, something he exhibits on SenkaSonic's second release. Landing after Ovens' excellent Fabriclive 84, Do One / Doberman features one track from that mix and a new one. "Do One" is the fresh tune, and it's the standout. The clenched-teeth verse from DRS is one of his better guest appearances in recent memory. The hooky piano line exemplifies what makes Ovens' tracks so moreish: it's catchy without going overboard, fitting into the fabric of the groove rather than overshadowing the drums. And those drums are beautifully lightweight, like a jungle break made from space-age plastic. "Doberman," from the Fabriclive mix, is no less fun, though it overtly recalls the ragga vibe of Ovens' breakout track, "Marka" (or "Buffalo Change" from the first SenkaSonic release). It's as muscular as he gets, riding a bassline that feels like a tidal wave slamming at hyperspeed, but for top-class Dub Phizix, stick with "Do One."
