Trux - Office07

  • Office is a Berlin label run by German house producer Baaz. Starting the project in 2011 on the back of his own work, he's since released two EPs and a full-length, as well as records from Christopher Rau and Iron Curtis, always keeping the information scarce and the music understated. But the seventh Office release might be its most low-key yet: the debut EP by an artist known only as Trux, Office07 is technically untitled, and features eight tracks that touch on an array of modest sounds, from glitch to deep house. To call the package intriguing would be a huge understatement. As if making a joke of the mystery, graphic designer Super Quiet adorned the cover with a vintage UFO. There's a stylistic freedom to Office07 that sounds not of its time. Loose comparisons to playful experimentalists like Actress could be made, but these dubby soundscapes and loose sketches more clearly evoke the spirit of '90s and early-'00s electronica, like Mouse On Mars circa Glam or Nobukazu Takemura. And yet little about the music feels nostalgic. "Skarb" uses an old jungle break for its frantic rhythm, but the reference is dismantled, cobbled into an unfamiliar shape and set against amorphous pad melodies. The vocal samples in "Temp" posit a fleeting human presence more than the memory of a song, and there's heavy sub frequencies all over the EP. 07 was clearly made by someone with a wide view of electronic music history, who has the tact and ingenuity to make something original from it all.
