Oliver Ho & Danny Passarella - Multi

  • Multi is the second multidisciplinary work from Danny Passarella (of Passarella Death Squad) and his new eponymous label. The first, Videodrome, inspired by David Cronenberg’s 1983 hallucinatory cult film, saw Passarella team up with Perc to produce five dark and droning soundscapes. The music was accompanied by a T-shirt collection and an exhibition featuring archival photos from iconic porn magazine Penthouse. Themes of erotica and voyeurism were central to Videodrome, whereas Multi is all about gender, sexuality and identity. It started out as a musical collaboration between Passarella and Oliver Ho, and has since spawned performance and video pieces. Musically, Multi ploughs the same moody, cinematic field as Videodrome. "Male" is delicate, with angelic moans, soft shushes and gentle woodblock taps. The bolder "Female" rolls together '80s piano stabs, kicks and strangled broken notes into a thick, atmospheric bundle, expanding slowly before dissipating altogether. The smouldering instrumentation of "Back" is fleshed out by wonky strums and rhythm-less thuds. "Forth" is the eeriest of the lot, like the sound of industrial music converging with ambient on a moonless night.
