- Now two years old, Lobster Theremin sub-label Mörk was inaugurated by nthng's debut, Remember Us, which veered towards deep and moody techno. The Dutch producer's dubbed-out productions are still Mörk's best: where some of their other records can get lost in a haze, nthng strikes a solemn coldness. His latest, a two-tracker for London label Pacific Command, hits more of that emotion.
Are You Here ripples with airy pads, giving the record a poignant glow. "In The Afterglow," the softer B-side, is the standout, with its dark rumbles suspended in a dreamy, amniotic atmosphere. The way nthng makes moody techno sound delicate touches on a similar vein to Traumprinz, albeit without the sophisticated scope. That's not to say it doesn't work, though, as "In The Afterglow" entrances as well as any. "Are You Here" is the extrovert. Glitzy synth stabs light across a submerged techno beat, and though it’s a bit too on-trend to really stick out, its glimmering sequence still speaks to nthng's allure.
