Trans A.M. - Speechless EP

  • The second release from Berlin label SPE:C continues the vein of hard-edged, high-polish techno established last year with Decka's Begyndelsen EP. This two-tracker from Trans A.M., two Bristolians named only as Harry and James, values low-end refinement and rhythmic precision over bludgeoning sonics. Sure, B-side "I Feel As Though" barks at you repeatedly, but it's the harshest thing you'll hear on Speechless, and the way it contrasts the tumble of mechanical drums only accentuates the tune's breadth. Shudders of sub-bass and punchy kicks thrust "Speechless" through a gauntlet of percussive accents, claustrophobic atmosphere and modulated bass snarls. Which is strong dance floor fare, no question, and could easily be mistaken for some unknown Livity Sound track. Trans A.M. do themselves a favor on "I Feel As Though," opening their hometown's trusty palette of dubwise techno to a couple unexpected sounds. There's real talent in Speechless's dialed-in subs and sharp drum programming, just not enough ingenuity to set it apart.
