Tross - Coast To Coast

  • Invisible, Inc.'s first release, in May, was a solid marker for the Glasgow label's broad cross section of dance music, whose unifying theme is a loose and lively 4/4 pulse. Among Invisible Family Vol. 1's contributors were Secret Circuit and Tim Love Lee, but the runny guitar-funk bassline of "Airbed Drifter," from Mexican newcomers The Poncho Brothers, suggested a more thorough A&R approach than a flick through Tim Sweeney's Rolodex. Tross, a proggy Swedish four-piece, is another new face on the Invisible, Inc. roster, one whose sensibilities are rooted in aerodynamic kosmische. Now and again, glimmers of bands besides Can and Neu! emerge—the ridged bass lick in "Rainbows" is a well-groomed lift from The Cramps—but Coast To Coast's commitment to a driving, hypnotic sound leaves little room for other ideas. A stomping bass guitar in "War Of Apples" nails the infantry march Coast To Coast aspires to, but the likeminded "Stars & Cones" is too sluggish to inspire that enthusiasm. Leavened by subtle pedal work and finely brushed snares, "Deluxe"'s softer timbres apply some shade to the EP, if not the extra dimensions it needs.
