Chrononautz - Made In Time

  • The members of Chrononautz played in bands before a love of techno and its machines brought their latest project into being. Their improvised jams still show signs of this oblique entry into dance music. Made In Time feels svelte and crisp compared to the two hallucinatory, side-length trips of their recent album, Noments. But the EP remains singular in tone, its elevated tempos and jerky melodies giving it a hectic but controlled energy. Points where the pair seem to lose control of their machines—a Noments staple—are rare. (The wildest we get is a few gleeful stop-starts in "Waveguide.") Instead, the duo pitch for the steely, mechanised precision of Detroit. Most successful is "Down Back," whose threshing snares and tinny vocoder blurts have a strong Drexciyan flavour. Minimalist bleep-scape "Cybele" is almost as good. Elsewhere the duo's restraint can lead to inconsequential noodling. "Acid Empathy"'s hollow strings don't give it an adequate climax, and "Cold Curve"'s morose chords, skimming through a selection of lacklustre stab patterns, feel at odds with the drums' frenetic pace.
