Perfecto Persents: Sandra Collins

  • She is without a doubt, the most recognizable female DJ in the world. Hell, she’s one of the most beloved DJs in the world regardless of gender. From her early beginnings with stimulating melodies to the harsh driving grooves of Trance, she spreads the gospel of electronic music through her massive uplifting sets. Dubbed “The Trance Goddess” by fans, she never disappoints a warm crowed. Her ability to capture the dancefloors around the sphere continues to elevate her status as one of America’s finest exports. The life of the party, her rock star persona is irresistible as she creates an atmosphere of fun and excitement whenever people are around her. Now after three years out of the cd compilation market, she embarks her return with the label that Paul Oakenfold started long ago during the ‘Summer of Love’ in 1989. She has been given the grace as Perfecto Presents: Sandra Collins. Cinematic buildups and temperamental changes create a vivid score from Junkie XL’s “Reshur,” U&K’s “Atmosphere,” and Agent 001’s (aka Steve Porter) “Bubble Bath (Martin Accorsi Remix).” Together as a whole, the three tracks start the cd off into a very pleasing mood. Soon after, building on the tension and release structure move on to Moby’s “In This World (Slacker's Rain Before Carnival Remix).” This mix is an excellent deep progressive lick with fattened percussion and sweeping mingles over vocals that build into the floor-filler of Layo & Bushwacka!’s “It's Up To You.” The Lee Cabrera Unreleased Dub begins to leave the sound of the score as it enters into more late-night club sounds. After this, the mix starts to lose its edge. It’s not because the party appeal isn’t wanted, but that the first few tracks set up a different mood than what it shifts onto. With the exception of G-Pal’s “No Other Man (The Greek's Remix),” the latter part of the mix doesn’t really fulfill me as the beginning of the mix did. Great selections and exceptional sequencing, both discs are very pleasing to the ears, but it’s the second disc that will get to you. Saiko Pod - Phutures (Atmos Remix) is a slick progressive breaks cut. Humate’s remix of Sydney’s (rework of R.E.M’s) “Losing My Religion” is a tech trancer that’s full of menacing synth effects and mashed up vocals. Once after, everything starts to go off like only Sandra can pull it. Quest Vs. The Dirty Fours’ “Bass Trap” continues Luke Chable’s reign of fire along with The Dirty Fours. A BIG track that builds for another BIG track, Rolasoul’s “Desire” is a devious track that is nothing short of a big room appeal. Chunky grooves connected with deep-low dirty production. One of my favorite tracks from Sandra, this track is anarchy. It all ends with BT’s “The Great Escape (Attention Defecit's Freewill Remix).” The original version off Emotional Technology was good, but the remix is a trippy ride that closes the set with charm. The Queen has return! This 2-disc is a presentation of Sandra Collins’ most accomplished work to date. Starting with “Transport” then moving on with “Cream” and now with Perfecto Presents, each release has seen a progression in style and execution. With the years of rigorous touring and interviews with mainstream magazines, Sandra never forgets where she came from. Building upon her signature combination of melodic vocals and now with dark progressive textiles, the journey has been far and beyond. Sandra deserves all the praise and admiration as it is will warranted. I think it’s time that Andy seriously think about having its first female DJ for Global Underground. I end this with the cover note on the cd… Paul Oakenfold ”Sandra Collins is simply one of the best DJ's on the planet, period. This wicked set is a musical testament to that fact.” I could not have said it better myself. Disc One: 1. Junkie XL - Reshurc 2. U&K - Atmosphere 3. Agent 001 - Bubble Bath (Martin Accorsi Remix) 4.
