Inoue Shirabe - Down Into The Black Church / Camping In Your Soul

  • Inoue Shirabe is a newcomer from Okayama, Japan, who debuted at the start of this year with French label Antinote. That two-tracker was perfectly trippy, an analogue zig-zag of squirmy house melodies and psychedelic jams. On his follow-up 12-inch, Shirabe stays on the outer edges, but this time—much like the sleeve art, which is an inverse, melted version of his first record—tempos are served slo-mo and shimmering. Both tracks are constructed around smudged drums and bleepy flourishes that scatter like beads of light. In this atmosphere, Shirabe unspools two gentle journeys. "Down Into The Black Church" is stony, its chopped lasers and silver chords spiraling out towards open galaxies (though a soft bassline tethers it to Earth). Along the way, glimmers of prettiness appear, eventually becoming weirder shapes. The less distinctive "Camping In Your Soul" is similar but with more heat: the beat thrums harder, the synths dive by in flashes. It's all less eccentric than Shirabe's first release, but the deeper shades suit him well.
