Isolée - Floripa

  • Though he never was a prolific producer, Isolée's release schedule is especially relaxed these days. This 12-inch for Pampa—his third on DJ Koze's label following Well Spent Youth and 2013's Allowance EP—marks the German artist's first output in two years. Two decades into his career, Isolée isn't at a stage where major stylistic left turns are likely, and on Floripa, little has changed in his lush, emotive house sound. Long-term fans will have no complaints about his two latest offerings. The title track's slow-building chords head up a production that's particularly gentle and introverted, even by Isolée's standards. Its bass melody, which is surrounded by regulation atmospherics, feels big and meaty but still inward-looking, as if Isolée puts a doomed brave face on his deep melancholy. A couple BPMs faster at 122, "Favouride" is likely to be the DJ pick. Its array of pinging toms and woodblocks coalesce into a sparky clatter, and there's an added shimmer to the familiar background of bass pads and windy effects.
