Nautil - Canopée

  • Nautil is one of the latest signings to Further Records, and Canopée is his debut release. All we know about him is that he's Parisian and a bioengineering student with a special interest in acoustics and signal processing. He's also a big fan of Further, having sent in Canopée as a demo to the Seattle label. Indeed, the three-tracker, a record of fluid techno embellished with Further's signature hypnotism, makes it sound like he's done his homework. Nautil's techno swims in the Italian school: it's long, droning and gradual. He lays his complex drum tracks down like spiderwebs. The effect is dazzling on the tribal-inflected title track, which takes up over nine minutes on the A-side. Sonar pings, icy pads and implacable sound effects pop up along the way, but "Canopée" remains static as a whole. "Mue" lays down the same net of scuttling percussion, but this time the track builds with chimes and a throbbing bassline that lends a decisive edge. With "Galdae," Nautil wraps dub techno around his wide-set structures, as dramatic chords and distant kick drums seem to pound away on the ocean floor. Further regulars like Donato Dozzy or Ricardo Donoso are obvious influences on Canopée, and this record should appeal to their fans.
