- Dan Berkson and James What, a London-based pair with a hardware-focused sound, have been releasing records together since 2006, working with labels like Dessous, Dogmatik and Poker Flat. Earlier this year, they put out their debut album, Keep Up Appearances, a well-rounded LP that captured varying shades of the dance floor experience. Several months later, an eye-catching remix package has emerged, with versions from Dorisburg, Frank & Tony, Dana Ruh and Rue De Plaisance affiliate Alan Doe.
"Seraphim," remixed here by Frank & Tony, first hit the shelves via Berkson & What's Modelmaker label in late 2014. It's a buoyant tech house cut, but the Scissor & Thread pair flesh out its moodier textures. Sad, low-toned synths bulge against dusty kicks and whirling pads, crescendoing slowly towards an intense, minute-long breakdown. It's nicely atmospheric, and winds up bettering the original.
"Worship" also came out ahead of Keep Up Appearances, and is reworked by Dana Ruh, who turns out a gorgeous roller in typically tight and tuneful fashion. Alan Doe's version on the B-side isn't as classy, the rise and fall of its flickering synth line giving it the slightly tired air of a '90s progressive number. Dorisburg's percussive take on "Feel Free" is enjoyable for its neat and nifty drum programming.
