Melodie might be the most exciting producer to have recently emerged from Bucharest's fertile house scene. His first solo outing was the fantastic Echo Rhythm EP, a three-track 12-inch on Raresh's Metereze label that paired modern minimalism with a classic house toolkit. It was hardly rocket science, but resulted in one of this year's best house records so far. Acid was Melodie's sound of choice, and he's followed up with more of the same on Influences. Released on RORA, it features two extended, rolling cuts that will go down nicely with fans of his first release.
Influences doesn't quite reach the heights of its predecessor, but it comes close. The sound is similarly emotional and pared-down, but with a sense of colour and vibrancy that could push its reach far beyond diehard fans of Romanian house. "Forever" is the most positive-sounding effort, a 13-minute tangle of loopy synth notes, open hi-hats and slamming bass. Those after more melancholic textures should put the needle on "Kate." Like its counterpart, the track's big bassline is matched with crisp drums and a variety of poignant atmospherics, capping off another stellar 12-inch from one of Romania's most promising new talents.
