Golden Teacher - Sauchiehall Enthrall

  • Sauchiehall Enthrall exists, as all Golden Teacher records do, between many genres. Dancehall, UK funky, musique concrète and various abstract forms are the main reference points, instead of the heady rumble of Afrobeat, acid house and disco found on EPs such as Party People / Love and Bells From The Deep End. Unsurprisingly, the group is just as well equipped to tackle these genres as the previous ones. Two of the EP's four tracks ("No Hemos Vivido" and "On The Street") feature Spanish vocals from multi-lingual singer Cassie; her rich voice could probably make reading the phone book in a comedic Scouse twang sound good, and it suits these tracks particularly well. On "No Hemos Vivido," Cassie's echoing yelp is surrounded by a warped pitter-patter of drums and bass notes. It's the record's subtlest offering until spiraling keys that may have been hewn from Clangers samples make a late appearance. The vocal for "On The Street" is more assertive, bolstered by sharp and staccato percussion. Cassie's stop-start delivery on "Shatter" is more patois-like, and the production's bumping bassline and cascade of high notes edges vaguely towards the dance floor. The frothy "In The Close" finishes an EP that further exhibits Golden Teacher's brand of infectious versatility.
