Mistake Made - Vault Series 17.0

  • Last autumn, Vault Series welcomed a fresh artist to the fold, breaking the cloistered circle that had consisted of founder Subjected and loyal conspirators Sawlin and Moerbeck. With no backstory, Mistake Made's first EP had to speak for itself, and it did so in heady terms worthy of Vault Series. Known for their clandestine approach and tendency towards a bruised and beaten sound, the producers were a perfect addition to the troupe, proving to have a preternatural flair for sound design. Vault Series 17.0 picks up where 15.0 left off: four rounds of considered club music teeming with quirky soundbites. There's that fuzzy, distressed drill on "Abandon," the steely jangles in "Convenient" and whatever's going on in the background of "Dreval"—tiny details that collectively nudge Mistake Made's doomy techno into its own space. "Loaded Memory" might be the standout, though, purely for its rejection of formal function in favour of something more subversive. But at the right time, and on the right system, it could double as a floor slayer, with an elongated build and a refusal to pander to anyone.
