Deetron - The Believer EP

  • Just like a Deetron set, a Deetron track is glossy, professional and goes down easy. That's been the model for Samuel Geiser's Character label, too, which has so far hosted his own records and a collaboration with Ripperton. "The Believer" is no different, though it comes with the dubious note that it's meant as a tribute to Detroit and Chicago. Mundane as that might sound, "The Believer" is a beautifully executed piece of uplifting house music. "The Believer" seems engineered for maximum pleasure without being overbearing about it. Geiser traps a shiny string motif at the centre, building a framework of peppy percussion and enthusiastic basslines around it—the low-end gets a shot of energy after the breakdown, further upping the euphoria. The second half is a controlled climax, emblematic of what Deetron does best while applying his signature polish in a smarter way than, say, 2013's pop-baiting Music Over Matter LP. He provides a stripped-back dub on the digital release if the strings are too much for you. Rounding off the 12-inch is "Dexterity," a loopy track that sounds like Geiser doing his best techno impression. There's enough reverb to make it feel huge, and the breakdown is satisfyingly dramatic, but it feels like a dry genre exercise next to something as life-giving as "The Believer."
