Vin Sol - Memory Scan

  • The simplicity of Vin Sol's analogue jams sometimes means you have to lean in a bit to hear the effort and skill that goes into making them sound as spontaneous as they do. Memory Scan is the latest expression of this, and it fits well with the rough and acidic sound of Delft, a nascent label run by Kevin McHugh, AKA Ambivalent. For headphone-listening purposes, "Just Whisper" is likely to get the most repeat plays, its warm bass groove and call-and-response key pattern falling at the more relaxed end of Vin Sol's output. The title track and "Solid Black" are both more fevered and muscular. The former's fleet-footed percussion and warning-siren sounds are likely to make it a mid-set staple for many DJs. The latter is the EP's most ornate cut, its competing bass grooves criss-crossing amid a militaristic clatter of snares and hats. The drum tool "Rhythm 124," meanwhile, closes things on an even more utilitarian note. There's nothing on Memory Scan that we haven't heard before from Sol, but as usual he delivers with maximum skill and minimum fuss.
