Gardens Of God - Zulu EP

  • If Ten Walls' unabashed rehashing of his horns-led formula has started to wear thin, then a record on his BOSO label from a fellow Lithuanian producer may have you on your guard. And the fact that Gardens Of God's last big track, summer 2014's "Gluk," had distinct shades of Ten Walls probably won't help matters. On Zulu, however, Gardens Of God (real name Mindaugas Lapinskis) thankfully has enough creative nous to leave the brass alone, going instead for a spacey sound that retains BOSO's usual sense of poise and grandeur. The two main tracks are both seven-and-a-half-minute slow-burners that lean towards the techno end of Gardens Of God's palette. "Zulu" nudges towards lift-off with gentle bass sighs and tiptoeing drums. An almost silent breakdown then leads into a meaty closing segment of punchy drums and sci-fi pads. "Juno 1" begins with an ambient synth pattern before becoming a relatively maximalist roller, with a bassline so croaky you can almost smell nicotine. Both are pleasingly restrained while allowing the odd moment of all-out energy. The short outro piece, "Juno 2," makes for a pretty bookend, with piano and synth lines and pads weaving their way around a slow-mo foundation of steady clicks and mournful clouds of bass.
