Terriers - Octagon

  • A lot of contemporary dance music artists do their growing up in public. Sometimes, as with adolescence, it can be tougher for some than others. By the summer's end, the Irish duo Terriers will have released at least three EPs, and in a relatively short time they've established what they're about. Taken as a whole, their output points to the wisdom of discovering your sound behind closed doors. I enjoyed these tracks well enough for the first three minutes or so, but after a time they seem to flick a switch and find a new direction, an extra yard of pace that makes things really blossom. In the case of "Octagon," splashes of acid are introduced to a shuttling drum track and foggy pads, lending it a little extra bite. Similarly, "Serpio800"'s sturdy thump and shattered hip-house vocal drifts on a thick bed of ambient synths until synth notes prick the track's cloudy silhouette. A flat, bassy synth presses down on "Believing The Crystal" like an overstuffed suitcase—and this much would've been just fine—but Terriers balance it with a reciprocal synth melody that wraps up the EP with a satisfying click.
