S.Moreira & Saverio Celestri - Interphase Issues EP

  • Since starting out in 2013, the Berlin label Slow Life has caused a stir within its small corner of the dance music world. The collective, which includes Cecilio, DJ Tree, Laurine, P.Villalba, Mayto and S.Moreira, can often be found behind the decks of Berlin institutions Club Der Visionäre and Hoppetosse. They're generally grouped with the likes of Binh and Nicolas Lutz as the next wave of minimal house specialists. The minimal tag is a reductive way to describe these DJs, but this is particularly true of the Slow Life crew, whose tastes stretch across many styles. The same applies to Slow Life's diverse label, whose only constants so far have been a lightness of touch and clarity of vision. Their fourth release, Interphase Issues, from in-house producer S.Moreira and Libertine resident Saverio Celestri, shoots for emotive, live-sounding techno, and mostly nails it. "Aftertouch" builds layers of shimmering melodies over intricate, acid-flecked percussion. "Karmikstrikes" shuffles along pleasantly until some deep synths lift its stepping drums into another place entirely. "Interphase Issues" performs a similar broken-beat trick to more murky ends, while '"Hypnosphere" is the duo's only misstep, hammering its dark mood home with little of the nuance that elevates the rest of the release. The EP may not contain the standout bombs of the collective's first three records, but it's the most enduring Slow Life release yet.
