Shenoda - Mancs

  • Hypercolour fixture Laurie Shenoda grafts garage's percussive shuffle and globules of bass onto his house grooves, and has done so for more than a dozen EPs. Mancs, his first release for London party/label Electric Minds, continues the streak with muscle and melody. The title track's euphoric synth is '90s rave as heard through a couple feet of water. The ever-present thumping kicks and skittery snares and hats, as well as a distorted vocal loop, complete the flinty tune. "Nonamenoname" and "Dave's Myth" differ in that they foreground hulking, grimy bass, albeit over similarly structured percussive beds. The former is the more chaotic iteration, its distorted voices and siren key shards pulling at the leash throughout, while the background features of "Dave's Myth" are little more than a restrained glimmer. Both will do damage in the right dark rooms, even if they don't break much ground.
