Gerry Read & Kevin McPhee - FRUMMPPP

  • Gerry Read and Kevin McPhee are a natural production pair. They don't always sound similar on their own—McPhee has a soft spot for melodic synth touches, Read leans heavily on his live-recorded quirks—but together they share a love for chunky, handmade drums. Back in 2011, they collaborated on the hard and heavy "Demolition Man," a house banger that went big on nasty warehouse beats. But "FRUMMPPP," its follow-up, underplays the producers' abilities in favour of monolithic austerity. Read and McPhee's original is a glorified DJ tool, which isn't inherently an issue, but it's also an uninteresting production. The 4/4 kick is boxy, the hats glitch like a dot-matrix printer and there's a buzzing tone that knocks around uselessly in the cracks. "FRUMMPPP (Remix)" has more personality, barely skirting the point of excess with its slippery sample melange, clattering drums and garbled synths. Tapping into the duo's infectious way with rhythm and noise, it's an ebullient version, and it sounds so drastically improved you might think you missed something in "FRUMMPPP."
