Ajello - That's True

  • Hailing from the same place as Santos, Ajello AKA DJ Rocca AKA Maffia Soundsystem is one producer who can’t be pinned down to one genre and has worked with the likes of Zed Bias, Pressure Drop and Peshay to name but a few. His latest offering for Loes Lee’s Moving Target imprint is That’s True, showing how true he sticks to the syncopated breakbeat sound. Side A. Elite Force Remix Elite Force is known for his collaborations with Meat Katie and together they produce some of the chunkiest tribal house/breaks crossover tunes such as “Toba” and “Ju Ju”. Elite Force transforms That’s True into another tribal house/breaks crossover giving it a really dirty droning bassline that likes to roll between 3 notes, whilst a church bell tolls on top. There’s plenty of different techy sweeps and samples layered on top to give the tune some variation and towards the end Elite Force chops up the breaks to give it a slight latin feel. Tribal and progressive fans should jump on this one. Side B1. Loes Lee Remix Moving Target Records head honcho Loes Lee transforms That’s True into a slightly minimal breaks affair, utilising some hard thumping kick drums on the bottom and a melodic acid synth line for melody on top. Halfway through, Lee adds in a few muffled vocal samples, a funked up squelch and breaks up the beats a little more for good effect. Apparently the Plumps have jumped onto this one giving it a big thumbs up. Side B2. Original Mix The shortest tune on the record is the original, the church bell tolls to introduce the tune. It’s a little slow on the build up, and after a while a funky disco style bassline kicks in to accompany the bells. It’s a hybrid of many styles incorporating elements of dub, latin and tribal beats – there’s a real dancehall type feel to the production overall (sounds like it’s really hollow). The original is a really moody tune that wouldn’t sound out of place on an LP. There’s a lot of variety in this release and it’s enough to satisfy the appetite of breaks and progressive enthusiasts.
