Gonno - Obscurant

  • Obscurant is, by conventional definition, club music, but it's hard to imagine this being played in a dark room. The melodies on Gonno's second EP for International Feel glint with warm natural light, and the other sounds float freely, as if roaming in a park on the first day of summer. This is certainly the case for "Obscurant," a track that feels its way into motion with arpeggiated synth notes and gently tapped cymbals, before a rush of sounds—bells, wriggly basslines, splashing hi-hats—flood the expansive space. "A Life With Clarinet"'s electronic harps race up and down the track's snappy drums, which build to a crescendo of cymbal crashes and snare fills. It has the basic structure of a house track, but the sounds feel shot through the prism of New Age music. Call Super's "Inna Loft" remix of "Obscurant" is moved by an earthier bassline. The original brings all the sounds in at once, but Call Super drip-feeds the track, with chirping birds and whistling flutes twirling amid its ticking rhythm.
