- A few weeks ago, Hardwax quietly announced two records from a Shed-affiliated label, The Final Experiment. The first, Break Up III TK 4, was by turns beautiful and bruising, while this one, For The Kingdom, is its sweeter, nostalgic cousin. One of the two artists listed on this record—PCK—is linked to René Pawlowitz, so it's probably safe to assume he's behind these tracks. For The Kingdom is a pretty explicit homage to '90s British dance music, and it's delivered with power and finesse—an iron fist in a velvet glove.
PCK's "Amen Garage" is basically rowdy as fuck. It's explosive, with the snare fills occuping almost every spare bit of space. A "hey, hey" vocal and some jelly-textured pads dash around whatever gaps they can find, as if they're being chased. Stable Mates' "Good Soul" lacquers its kicks with a pitched-up male vocal and a scissoring melody that cuts through the track's dusty air in zig-zagging shapes. These are tracks with sharp edges, but it's hard not to have a soft spot for them.
