The Loose Control Band - It's Hot

  • The Loose Control Band is a new-ish project from Jonah Sharp, one half of Reagenz, and Jason Drummond, AKA DJ Spun. Their music is basically house, but its constituent parts come from a record store's worth of genres. Following the lockstep pulse of Lose Control, the pair's second release on Golf Channel abandons 120 BPM tempos for something that makes their influences more explicit. With the help of Liquid Liquid's Sal Principato and the bassist Ray Stevens II, The Loose Control Band grapples with the punk-funk sensibility they toyed with on the recent Acid Ahora EP. The blurry contours and smudgy bass of "It's Hot (Columbus Hotel Mix)" are bashed together with distorted guitar and a laser-sharp synth line. At the three-minute mark, the song takes an unexpected turn: there's a little breakdown where the guitar grinds into itself and a much darker bassline ploughs the track's zig-zagging furrows. It's as thrilling as it is messy. "It's Hot (Original Mix)" is like something one of Stevens' old skate-punk bands may have put out—the lead vocal suggests teen angst, a feeling aided by a chaotic assembly of bass, drums and bleeps. "It's Hot (808 Mix)"'s quick slap of chintzy 808s and breathless bongos is the most spacious track here, and offers a nice breather from its noisier neighbours.
