Various - Body 1:1 Mind

  • Tikita launched last summer with an EP of reissued tracks (and one previously unreleased cut) from the Japanese producer Ko-Ta. For its second release, a compilation called Body 1:1 Mind, the label casts another look to the past, but also sets its sights on the present. Ko-Ta is onboard again, and joining him this time are Kiyokazu Hamawaki, a former label-mate at Ko-Ta's shuttered tribal techno outpost Stratosphere, along with Artefakt and Iori. Ko-Ta's "Drums Of Life," a recent production, fits right in with the hypnotizing rhythms he's previously put out—it's a straightforward 4/4 track where vocal chants and monotone beeps take turns wheeling in and out of focus. Artefakt's "Hypnosis," though blandly titled, adopts a longer, more free-flowing format, as usual for the Dutch duo. Across almost eight minutes, it tickles the brain with chirping rhythmic motifs, while every so often letting acidic whirlpools rise out of a rumbling low-end. Iori and Hamawaki turn in broken-beat tracks. The former is in restrained and particularly moody form on "Falcon," his endlessly sustained chords casting a pall over dense, syncopated drums. But the best is saved for last: Hamawaki's "Untitled #15," produced in 2000, is a tool-ish track with wonderful clarity and sense of space, where boomeranging loops of dried-out percussion brake only for well-placed orchestral swoons. While not as essential as the first Tikita record, Body 1:1 Mind is a strong and versatile release.
