Brendon Moeller - BASH006

  • Now half a dozen releases deep, the concept behind the Bangers & Ash series is well established. Contributors are invited to make a record of two halves: one for the club, the other for the post-club smoke. Most of the producers involved have been newer figures, an oddball assortment including BAT, Clay Wilson and Certain Creatures. But for its next five releases, the series shifts its focus to veterans of the New York scene. South African Brendon Moeller is a natural place to start: he's appeared on Styles Upon Styles before, collaborating with Wilson and Certain Creatures as BM/CC/CW, and is a versatile artist who's suited to the brief. Both sides of the record give off a frosty vibe to which Moeller is no stranger. On the Ash side, "Magic Luck" works nicely, its rich synth line seesawing elegantly over chilly howls of white noise. The spidery melody of "A Blizzard Of Flurries" doesn't quite supply the same hook. The Bangers side is similarly mixed. "Incoming" is a masterful construction of insectoid clicks and bleeps, with only occasional feedback disrupting the icy clarity. "Intentionality" is weaker; its dissonant melody and grumbling low-end upset that delicate balance between darkness and gentle light.
