K15 - M I S T

  • M I S T is the first release on No Room For Air, a new label from Kyle Hall that releases 7-inches (as Hall's other label, Wild Oats, does now and again). For London's K15, whose 2014 Wild Oats double-pack received high praise and higher Discogs prices, this is a chance to indulge a love of jazz and soul. K15 often tweets about artists like Robert Glasper, Herbie Hancock and Madlib, and their rich, rolling textures are all over this EP. In format and feel, M I S T is the kind of gem you'd want to put in a keepsake box. The title track blossoms with an R&B vocal sample, then dissolves into a thicket of drums and sleepy-eyed Rhodes. The beatless "Twilight" glows and whispers, hanging in the air like a delicate fragrance. The B-side feels thicker. A downbeat rolls into a funked-out peak, building up Zhané's lovelorn harmonies—the same ones Hall sampled on 2013's "Crushed." At this point, a project by either of these artists is bound to get attention. But by feeding such a simple and soulful record to an audience hooked on house and techno, it seems to serve as a warm reminder: other sounds are out there, too.
