Tornado Wallace - Kangaroo Ground / Ferntree Gully

  • Melbourne's Lewis Day was last seen on Beats In Space in summer 2013 with the intoxicatingly tropical Desperate Pleasures EP. More of the same certainly wouldn't have been unwelcome, but Kangaroo Ground / Ferntree Gully finds Day going down a couple of other avenues while retaining the warmth that always infuses his productions. "Kangaroo Ground" evokes "Thinking Allowed" from Wallace's 2013 EP of the same name. It's a creaking, mid-paced acid number that complements its granulated bassline with star-gazing pads and manipulated harmonies. On the flip, "Ferntree Gully" conjures a sparkling Italo polish through a spine of soft-focus keys and swooping bass flourishes. While neither track quite hits the heights of "Space Tropics," the delicious standout on Desperate Pleasures, both have the deft touch and charm that have long made Day's productions worth seeking out.
