  • Drvg Cvltvre's background in punk and black metal is clear on his dance records, if only superficially. He's produced two EPs called Oblivion. Another—in case you didn't get it the first time—is called Everything Oblivion. Two of his recent releases were called Nuclear Holocaust and American Psychosis. These records have bite, but they're not as forbidding as their titles suggest. His latest EP, Telepathic Warfare, bubbles with viscous acid and sludge-covered synths but, like previous efforts, it's not especially experimental or "difficult" music. And that's fine, because these are great acid house records forged in the doom-laden style of D'Marc Cantu. A key feature of Telepathic Warfare is the weight of its sound design: "New Earth Army," for example, seems to tremble at the force of its own drums, while its leathery synths and elastic acid melody combine to give it plenty of muscle without being overpowering. The other two tracks, "We Have Become The Filth Of The Universe" and "Possessed," edge closer to the dystopic world that Drvg Cvltvre's music orbits. Despite the former's concussive drums and strobe-like pulse, there's an archness to it that makes it quite accessible. The same could be said for "Possessed," which, strolling at around 110 BPM, sounds like a Cottam record dragged through a PG-rated vision of hell.
