FYI Chris - No Hurry / Juliette

  • Church bosses Seb Wildblood and Apes have a way of spotting new talent—they released Happa's first record, and booked Disclosure at Corsica Studios before they blew up. Their next potential discovery is fellow South Londoners Chris Watson and Chris Coupe, AKA FYI Chris, whose debut two-tracker on the sub-label Church White is up there with the best music from the Camberwell camp. Looking at the label's sonic spectrum, which ranges from Happa's furious bass workouts to Wildblood's sublime deep house, No Hurry / Juliette sits nearer the latter. The A-side is the more club-ready of the two, as hefty kicks and a husky bassline cut through a toasty palette of sampled soul vocals, balmy chords and rattling hi-hats. It's a tried and tested formula, but the record's warmth makes it engaging. FYI Chris switch up the mood on the flip, going straight for the heartstrings with "Juliette." From the stirring opening synths and perfectly plump bassline to the way the elements coast gracefully in and out of the mix, this is as well executed as any house cut currently circulating UK dance floors.
