DJ Yellow & Flowers And Sea Creatures - Deep Into Neon

  • You may recall Flowers And Sea Creatures from their time on Buzzin' Fly a few years back, but despite the promise of their brooding debut for Ben Watt's label, the Montreal duo didn't quite kick on as they could have done. More recently, vocalist Graham Baxter and Kosta Megalos have been collaborating with dance floor talents. Deep Into Neon comes a year after the Canadians first rubbed shoulders with France's DJ Yellow on Compost Black Label. The original mix of "Deep Into Neon" may be on the B-side but it's no inferior product, despite the strength of the remixes. Baxter's rich falsetto lends itself to the slow-burning malevolence of the rhythm track, where a dark bass hum acts like an undertow, pulling jagged Depeche Mode-style synths and hissing hi-hats into its vortex. Tuff City Kids (Gerd Janson and Philip Lauer) also dial into that '80s synth pop sound, as well as leaning towards one of its progenitors, coldwave. Featuring a simple heavy bass riff and trilling high notes, it's retro without being pastiche. Yet the pick of the bunch comes from Konstantin Sibold, whose "This Is Not A Remix" works elements of David Bowie's "This Is Not America" into a dubby disco storm. With just the right amount of camp, it's another strong indicator that Sibold is one to watch.
