Soulphiction - Riot Party

  • Philpot Records boss Michael Baumann has already released two EPs for Jena's Musik Krause and he here adds a third that's as enjoyably idiosyncratic as it is endearingly dusty. Baumann, who also records as Jackmate, goes for attention-grabbing drama on opener "Ann Arbor." Its primary ingredient is a croaky spoken-word vocal, around which eerie synths, shrill percussion and tumbling bass drums rumble and flit. The vocal grates a little at times, but the track is nicely atmospheric nonetheless. "Bass Jam" is submerged-sounding and aptly named, its first half an almost loungey chug and its second a taut, gently paced blend of nudging bass and sharp claps. On the flip, "With Attitude" and "Riot Party" are both freeform scatters of sleepy bass, brittle high notes and echoing voices that are interesting if not essential. "Detox," meanwhile, has the EP's biggest surprise: it appears to go for the same grainy sound as its counterparts, then morphs into a strange cover of Grandmaster Flash's "The Message" with a soulful female vocal.
