DJ Milktray - All Because The Lady Loves

  • Alongside Local Action's Finn McCorry, Burberry-clad Glaswegian DJ Milktray is part of a micro-wave of new grime producers taking the "R&G" brief very literally. Both artists have reassembled R&B classics according to grime's fractured logic, creating a pair of playful Boxed anthems in the process. McCorry did less with "Keep Calling," his twist on Ginuwine's "Final Warning"—after all, the rhythmic sensibility of Timbaland, the track's producer, is already buried deep in grime's DNA. Tackling Cassidy and R. Kelly's "Hotel," Milktray dices his ingredients more finely, but the results are no less explosive. The track's guitar licks and Kelly's flimsy seduction schtick are pulled apart in a way that seems reverent and mocking in equal measure. Even over a year after first getting airplay, the track continues to charm. The rest of the EP sticks to the same formula—catchy 8-bar cut-ups deploying R&B's sonic palette—but Milktray can't quite reproduce "Hotel"'s blend of pop appeal and boisterous immediacy. His version of 50 Cent's "Just A Lil Bit" captures the original's sultry tension but doesn't add much beyond a feverish grime twitch. "L'Hommes 94"'s two-part structure alternates between angsty moans and something almost funky, but it lacks an all-important hook. "Genie Riddim," with its sugar-sweet piano and guitar samples, is the pleasant surprise. Its 2-step rhythm seems to skip along without a care in the world.
