Mr. Beatnick - Marshmallows

  • Collected on an album last year, the Synthetes trilogy of EPs saw Nick Wilson successfully reincarnate himself as a well-regarded house producer. Marshmallows, for the label of South London club night Tief, simply continues along the same affable deep house arc. This if-it-ain't-broke strategy proves sensible, particularly on the lead track, whose creamy disco-house vibe is of a piece with many Beatnick triumphs ("Synthetes," "Sun God," "Symbiosis"). If anything, it's even more fulsome than its predecessors; the way its heartstring-tugging chords are continually enriched is highly sophisticated. The results put Wilson in a similar position to the Floating Points of a few years back, treading a refined and melodic path through deep house convention. The remainder of the EP isn't quite so strong. "Oxytocin" explores crisper synthetic pastures, while downtempo number "Ice Cream Strut" brings the earthy funk, its breakbeats and juicy bassline a treat to the ears. When a Beatnick-trademark string loop sashays sweetly into view, it becomes clear that this sample-based soundworld is where his strength really lies. The coating of grit to Francis Inferno Orchestra's remix of the same track brings home just how pristine and soft-edged the original is. The contrast is welcome, but that's not to say Wilson should alter his approach—judging by Marshmallows, things are just fine as they are.
