Various - Tokyo Impressions Vol. 1

  • Junk Yard Connections is run by Mr Tophat, a producer best-known for his work with fellow Stockholm artist Art Alfie. He founded the label in 2010, and has since released work from lesser-known countrymen like Hannes Netzell, Adam Strömstedt and Ben Morris, along with a well-received effort from German producer Christopher Rau. Several new Japanese producers step up for the label's latest release, which came about after Mr Tophat met one of them at the Tokyo record store Disk Union. Tokyo Impressions features two classy, club-ready house cuts and what sounds like a live jam. A mellow, extended track from Hagatoshi called "Mr. Funkenstein" occupies the entire A-side. It's trippy, engaging and kicks along above 130 BPM, making it a good option for taking things deeper later on in the night. "Butagoya" by Floda is loopy, percussive and extremely groovy, spiced up by a spacey spoken-word sample. There's a long and sudden breakdown that DJs might find more disruptive than its maker intended, but there's thankfully plenty of wax to chew on before it hits. The live-sounding cut, "Kauboihatto," closes things out with stifled drums and bass—this one's probably for home listening only.
