Distant Echoes - Fury Road EP

  • Berlin outfit Dystopian have so far kept their label in-house. Crew members Rødhåd, Alex.do, Recondite and Felix K have supplied its first eight releases, each riffing on the label's signature hypnotic sound. But they've looked outside their core roster for its latest 12-inch, hosting the debut release from Italian artist Distant Echoes. Titled Fury Road, it's as funky as it is hypnotic, and it's one of Dystopian's best, most accessible records to date. On Fury Road, Distant Echoes sounds more German than Italian, with a subtle swing and bounce in each of the tracks. Opener "Beyond Thunderdome" is the EP's hardest cut, coupling a heaving kick with a recurring synth riff. "Road" is more playful, with dubby stabs and a housey vibe. Flip the vinyl and you'll find "Master Blaster," the standout track. Punchy and tough, it's a bomb that steadily builds in intensity by accumulating a snare, more trippy synth sounds and catchy vocal. It will surely be a highlight in any set. The more serious "Outback" caps off a solid debut from a techno artist to look out for.
