Desert Sound Colony - The Way I Began EP

  • Looking over Scissor & Thread's back catalogue, you get the impression that Francis Harris and Anthony Collins are picky about who they work with. To date, only Bob Moses, Black Light Smoke and Gry Bagøien have made the cut, so the introduction of Desert Sound Colony feels like a moment in itself. The Way I Began also marks the London producer's debut under the alias, and the label's 20th release. It seems like the music Harris and Collins release has to ascribe to a certain dream-like aesthetic. This is certainly true of DSC, whose vivid, melodic electronica lands somewhere between Caribou, Bob Moses and War Paint. The result, though far from groundbreaking, is strikingly catchy. Take the title track, which lays daybreak riffs and lovesick murmurs over a chugging groove. Or "Fire Egg," with its bold vocal range and pop-song structure. Indeed, by the time you reach "Iris" and "I Get Fixed," both self-assured surges of guitar licks and fleshy basslines, you'll find yourself fully immersed in a world of psychedelic highs. OK, so after a while the sheer density of sound can be a little tiring, although that same richness and confidence could be what makes the EP memorable. With some fine-tuning, Scissor & Thread could have a real talent on their hands.
