Bruce - Not Stochastic

  • Information on Bruce remains thin on the ground, even after Just Getting Started, his lauded debut for Livity Sound sub-label Dnuos Ytivil. Hessle Audio have provided all of one sentence of information about this release, but as with Just Getting Started, one listen is all it takes to get thoroughly excited about this artist. All three tracks deftly walk the line between broken abrasion and glinting prettiness, with opener "Not Stochastic" resting primarily on sharp high notes that threaten to tumble over on themselves. Far-off industrial grinds and submerged bass wax and wane in the mix, creating something that's half club-ready and half sound-art. On the flip, "Trip" and "My Legs Wouldn't Go Quick Enough" are both almost meditative, the former particularly so. "Trip" bubbles away gently, with the odd echoing bleep coursing through drums that sound like boats nudging together quietly at a dock in the dead of night. "My Legs Wouldn't Go Quick Enough" is more skittish, though its brittle, flashing qualities are leavened by gently whistling pads and and a softened undercurrent of bass.
