Steve Lawler - That's House

  • Being one of the chief flag bearers of tech house was Steve Lawler's making and very nearly his undoing. And yet he's still here, his ViVa Warriors nights as popular as ever, whichever part of the globe they're taking place in—one thing you can never doubt him for is his tenacity and hard work. And that goes for his production work, if this EP for Seth Troxler's Play It Say It is anything to go by. Both "That's House" and "Most Beautiful Girl" wear their Chicago influences on both sleeves. On "That's House," Lawler lays down a fluid old-school groove straight from the Frankie Knuckles school, adorning it with some acid filigree for good measure. There's even a Marshall Jefferson soundalike, imploring you to "get on down" to add a further stamp of authenticity. Lawler employs a bleepier approach on "Most Beautiful Girl," upping the acid across its mesmeric, drawn-out groove. As with the A-side, the veteran producer executes it sympathetically and with some aplomb.
