Fanon Flowers - Hunt Patterns

  • US producer Fanon Flowers returns to his own Mechanisms Industries with Hunt Patterns, his first EP under his own name on the label in a decade. The three productions continue in his recent vein of brooding, heavily atmospheric techno, the focus being more on immersion than aggression. As the sequential titles suggest, the tracks all sound pretty similar, each gathering thick clouds of noise as it moves atop sparse 4/4 drums. "Hunt Pattern 1" is the most stifling. It has a blanket of shuddering chords at its core, while a sharp hi-hat occasionally pierces the mix to provide a sense of forward movement. "Hunt Pattern 2" summons similarly bleak vibes along with a hint of melody, thanks to a sullen, zig-zagging synth riff. "Hunt Pattern 3" is more intricate and just a bit lighter. Nearly eight minutes long, it starts with a trippy current churning down low, before a metallic riff surfaces mid-way through and, paired with percussive ticks, settles the track into its groove. If you like your techno extra dark, you can't go wrong here.
