Subdued Kamel - Helgrillad Kamel / Studsande Kamel

  • Over the past 12 months, Bossmusik has established itself as a source of sleek and compelling beat tracks. The label is based in Berlin but has roots in Sweden: both of its past 12-inches, Smuts / Studs and Liksom / Eller, came from Dorisburg, one half of the Swedish duo Genius Of Time, and its new one is by Subdued Kamel, a new duo from Stockholm. Bossmusik's third record, Helgrillad Kamel / Studsande Kamel ("whole-grilled camel"/"bouncing camel"), matches the label's ethos, if not its quality standard. "Helgrillad Kamel" gallops straight ahead at a brisk 130 BPM; "Studsande Kamel," true to its name, rides a more buoyant groove. Both are lean and carefully assembled, so rich with percussive detail that it's hard to pick apart all the elements. That said, there's something missing here—call it the mysterious spark that makes one groove groovier than another, that makes some rhythms catchy in the same way melodies are. This is something Dorisburg habitually nails, not least on his past EPs for Bossmusik. The generally impressive composition of these tracks suggests Subdued Kamel will be there soon enough, if not quite yet.
