Mickey Pearce - Instructions

  • Rinse FM's Richard Attley, AKA Mickey Pearce, caught our attention in March with Up West, which was given away for free through Loefah's Swamp 81 label. This EP for Swamp 81 collects on vinyl four of the tape's best moments. In an interview recently, Pearce told me that he is "way more into rhythms than anything else. My favourite bit of a track is often the intro, before any of the 'music' has begun." The infectious cuts here bear this out but are far more than just flinty floor tools. "Denzel Interlude" is a minute-long, coiled-spring mix of swirling pads and rat-a-tat snares, while "Instructions" is more substantial, its early whomp of distorted bass drums and clicking hats eventually complemented by sharp keys and wood-block whacks. "Jam Interlude" is fractured and whirring, its slippery percussive whips achieving an air of tension. Closer "Jersey" may be the pick of the bunch, with a pretty synth melody oscillating to euphoric effect over bubbling bass. All four pull the rare trick of working as home listening fare as well as DJ tools.
