Terriers - House No 9

  • Up until now Terriers, the Dublin pairing of Ronan Downing and Peter Ward, have been trading in squelchy, early-hours electronica, but they kick off their relationship with hometown label Major Problems by staggering woozily towards the dance floor. On "House No 9/Stardragon" Terriers lay down a slow-house groove so dazed that it sounds like it's been eased down to - 8. From out of its haze comes a clanking anvil rhythm and drifty pads, and it's that battle between heavy and light that becomes a theme across the EP. "Baywalker" sounds likes it's buried itself in a pillow, with swollen keys providing an emotive counterpoint to a wickedly inventive and gnarled bassline. Similarly, "Panama Jack" is a close cousin of the title track, albeit with the tempo raised a notch. To it Downing and Ward throw in endless waves of trilling 8-bit synths that sparkle amid the thick stew of distorted kicks. The remix finds Tuff Sherm twisting "Stardragon" into metallic machine funk, punctuated by bursts of steam and tied together by a wistful synth motif. But it's the originals that linger longest. If you're out to make a name for yourself quickly, you better be offering something different. Terriers' murky but beautiful electronic soup is just that.
