- There are lots of records that sound like Bred For Pleasure's Better Than This. It's the type of glossy deep house that may not be revolutionary, but is still remarkably catchy. The magic ingredient is a vocal by UK singer Aaron Soul. R&B aficionados might remember Soul from his minor hit "Ring, Ring, Ring." It was a record with charm, but one that couldn't compare to the American soul it was inspired by. Although Soul failed to set the R&B world alight, he did find a niche providing vocals for UK garage producers, and worked with cult hero Groove Chronicles. In a previous decade, "Better Than This" could easily have made a great 2-step garage roller. Here it comes to life as a punchy house track where synth licks play nicely off the breathy vocals.
The release comes with two remixes from Larry Heard, a bonafide house legend if ever there was one. This feels like a coup for Lower East Side—he's undoubtedly the most storied producer to release on the label—but his remixes, while tasteful, lack the spark of his best music. Most people will simply be happy with the original. It is, in it's own little way, a rather fine record.
