XDB - Afrikk

  • Kosta Athanassiadis pumps out spacey house and techno at a reliable clip. He's the kind of producer whose records slip comfortably into a set without calling too much attention to themselves. That's just what Afrikk, his second EP for Echocord, offers, excelling when it slots into a laid-back groove but also falling into complacency. "Burgund" is in the former camp: a jazzy, twinkling house number with playful keyboards and synths, it slowly builds momentum as Athanassiadis pulls each element in and out of orbit. On the other hand, the more techno-oriented "Indywa" sounds amateurish, with limp chords that never mesh with the rhythm. The title track is an average effort that rolls along with a little dubwise skip and some muted chords, but it's Philogresz who really unlocks the its potential. His remix adds some percussive panache—playful snare work here, a slightly askew hi-hat there—and then drops a powerful chord progression that makes the other three tracks sound like they're on autopilot in comparison.
