Shlømo - Rechaïm

  • Bright Sounds' first two EPs were big on dubbed-out techno where texture took precedence over rhythm or melody. Its third—and the second release from Taapion boss Shlømo—treads similar ground, although the Parisian is happier to dabble in more rousing moments; the EP revels in swampy chords and deep subs, but there's a strident feel to, say, the title track's kicks and snares. Or in the way "Theory Of The Worst" knits together three separate synths to fashion something approaching a melody, which bubbles gloopily out of tar-like bass. It's like the imprint of a main-room record pressed into wax and visible only in outline. The A-side is less oppressive, and less successful for it. There's a touch more space in the play between "Grounded Queen"'s delayed kicks and pads, which swirl a touch too aimlessly to be either atmospheric or engaging. It's the same problem with "The Other Side"'s loping bassline, which swaps the flip's chest-compressing load for Levon Vincent funk but forgets the percussion that gives his records so much energy. Shlømo—and Bright Sounds—are at their best when the music feels like it's drowning rather than caressing you.
